Description:
Abstract:
This data layer represents areas of marine invertebrate
distribution and known resource use in Kachemak Bay. The
information was obtained from Critical Habitat Area (CHA)
maps, and directly from biologists and local experts. The
data are in the form of an ARC/INFO region coverage. Regions
were used because they can "overlap" one another, allowing
for the fact that some areas have more than one species
and/or resource use associated with them.
Purpose:
Distribution maps for Kachemak Bay are intended to provide
biologists, managers, and the public with a general idea of
species occurrence within Kachemak Bay and the surrounding
area. The maps do not represent exact ranges or current
locations of particular species. They do however, provide
information about known resource use areas, and may thus be
used to assist in management and conservation decisions
within Kachemak Bay.
Supplemental_Information:
The majority of the information used to compile this
coverage was obtained from biologists and local experts. The
data were gathered during interviews and transferred to
mylar overlays on 1:63,360 USGS topographic maps. The
information gained from the interview process was only
used if it was obtained from a professional in the associated
field or corroborated by at least two other sources (i.e.,
CHA maps, other interviewees). Due to varying degrees of
overlap among the regions, this data layer is not
necessarily conducive for mapping and display purposes. It
is recommended that one use a GIS software package to select
for those features associated with a particular species
and/or resource use then save the selection as a new data
layer. Otherwise, one can map or display the data through
the creative use of hatch patterns and transparent
backgrounds to show areas of overlap.

Access_Constraints:
To ensure distribution of the most current public information,
please refer requests for data or products to the Alaska
Department of Fish and Game, Habitat Restoration Division (see Distribution_Information Section).
Use_Constraints:
One should not use the data at a scale larger than 1:63,360. Any
hardcopies utilizing these data sets shall clearly indicate their
source. If the user has modified the data in any way, they are
obligated to describe the types of modifications they have
performed on the hardcopy map. User specifically agrees not to
misrepresent these data sets, nor to imply that the Alaska
Department of Fish and Game approved the changes they made. There
are no security restrictions on these electronic files once they
leave ADF&G. Consequently, they should not be relied upon, nor
used for making regulatory decisions regarding permitting or use.

of the data, and any errors were corrected.
